Pre Raphaelites

The Pre-Raphaelites refer to an English art movement of the 19th century. It was created with the founding of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, PRB, by artist friends William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rosetti. The name outlines the chosen program - model was the Italian art of the Renaissance before the time of the painter and architect Raphael (1483-1520). Reason was their conviction that the artistic naivety had been lost and omnipresent Mannerism offered no opportunities for development. Later, the group was supplemented by artists such as Collinson, Deverell, William Michael Rosetti, Solomon, Stephens and Woolner. At times the community published the journal The Germ, later: Art and Poetry. The PRB was dissolved in 1853, some of the artists later found themselves in the Hogarth Club again. One focus was on the most accurate picture of nature. What the Academy of Arts taught should be overcome and art freed. Here there was a parallel to the German Nazarenes around Overbeck had come together. One source of inspiration was literature, especially works by Blake, Shakespeare and the late Romantic Tennyson. In their nostalgic yearning, the Pre-Raphaelites sought a landscape that was still unspoiled by industrialization and stability in the pure and undisguised. The Academy of Arts initiated the painting style of the Pre-Raphaelites and excluded them from their exhibition halls. Critics derided their works, while other artists sympathized. Only by an essay Ruskins 1851 in the Times, the painting style salutauglich - the parallels to the esteemed William Turner and the picturesque new approaches have now been hailed. These included clear, bright colors, bright light, the most respectful, respectful study of nature and the reproduction of even the smallest details. The content was about the mystical in the soul life, the preference of true passion for beauty or elegance. This approach has marked English art; Influences are visible, for example, in Burne-Jones, de Morgan, Morris or Stanhope.
