Ferdinand Hodler's Lake Silvaplana in autumn is a painting of great, suggestive power. At first, the view of the wide sky is focused in soft blue, which forms an almost transparent contrast to the cool blue of the lake surface. However, full magic does not unfold in the endlessness of the sky, which stretches like a tent roof over the lake surface: The magic of this painting is reflected in the supernatural beauty with which the Alpine chain is reflected on the surface of the lake. Fascinated, the view wanders from top to bottom. Almost identical, the beauty of the Swiss mountain scenery is repeated in the reflection of the water.

But not only the rugged mountain ranges and velvety hills impress the viewer. Hodler, painter of the Art Nouveau style, dissects surfaces in color contrasts. In addition to powerful brown and earth tones, light and dark green as well as bright blue tones can be found. The landscape, which casts a spell over the viewer like a semicircle, is underlined by a bright beam of yellow in the middle of the picture. This nature works for itself. People and human actions are missing. It is only the enchanted mood of a bright autumn day that creates a subject of timeless beauty in full clarity and precision. Atmospheric white clouds set delicate accents. But even they are of fleeting beauty as well as the impression that the painter / viewer feels in the midst of nature.

Ferdinand Hodler, the son of Swiss farmers, has expressed his love of the lake and mountains in many paintings. Also significant in this oil painting is the symmetry and geometry of the image structure. Thus, this work of art, also as high-quality art print, on the one hand by the contrast of strong and delicately transparent colors. On the other hand, the symmetry of nature and reflection removes the clear delimitation from above and below: on the contrary, lake and surrounding nature act as a fantastic unity that invites time and again to contemplate and linger.

Reflections on different Swiss lakes and the combination of mountain and lake are a big theme in Ferdinand Hodler's work. Unlike in many other paintings, the artist does not translate the mountains into shades of blue here, but lends contrasting hues to the contrasting colors of the mountains and nature. © Meisterdrucke
