The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD is the first truly documented volcanic eruption in history, thanks in particular to the records of Pliny the Younger and the archaeological excavations on site. Even the word volcano presumably goes back to considering the eruption of Mount Vesuvius as the divine intervention of the god of fire and blacksmith Vulcanus. Accordingly, Brullov paints the fall of Pompeii as a disaster that comes from the hands of the gods on the people: The ash cloud breaks at the top, left edge of the picture and a lightning strikes in the roof of a temple. In Pompeii alone 1150 people were killed, with the victims of the neighboring cities Herculaneum, Stabiae and Oplontis, which were also destroyed, even 5000. © Meisterdrucke
