Saudade is a Portuguese word that is untranslatable. It stands for the longing for something that you loved and lost forever and the knowledge that you will never get over it again. The word comes from the Latin "solutudo", which means loneliness. Saudade, however, includes much more. In the picture Saudade by Almeida Júnior you can see a woman who has this feeling. She holds a photograph in her hand, obviously of something she has lost, perhaps a loved one's dead. She is dressed in black to express her grief and holds a scarf over her mouth, indicating that she just wants to be alone. Although her face is half covered, you can see the deep sadness in her eyes.
