Classicism   •   Jacques Louis David @ Wikipedia

The French painter Jacques-Louis David is best known for his series of classicist historical paintings. As a Jacobean member of the National Convention and Security Committee, he was a prominent actor on the political scene during the French Revolution. Among his painted commentaries of this period of change were, above all, " The Murder of Marat " (1793). Later, David became the transfigurer of the imperial era with works such as " Coronation of Napoleon I " (1806).

However, art historians associate David with the breakthrough of classicism in painting. In 1785, David's oil painting " The Oath of the Horatians " (1784) was presented to the public with tremendous success. This is in stark contrast to the playfulness of hitherto dominant Rococo painting determination and the will to act propagated image represents a pathetic scene from the early Roman history: The three brothers of the Horatier family in a proxy struggle for life and death for Rome against Alba Longa compete. Before the fight, the father takes his sons from the gun oath and holds their swords. In contrast to this group of four determined by energy and combat tension, David has set mourning women in mourning. A dark background and antique arcade elements complete the picture composition. In retrospect, the image, which today looks rather stiff, was contemplated by David's contemporaries as calling for revolution.

The revolutionary artist was expelled from the Restoration of France after 1815. He died in Brussels in 1825 at the age of 77 in exile in Brussels. © Meisterdrucke
