Born in 1854, the French painter and illustrator began his training with Henri Lehmann at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. Soon enough, however, the young artist took on the wanderlust and, after long journeys through Europe, finally accepted a job in England, which was to become his professional home.

In 1882 he took a job at the publishing house The Illustrated London News, where he illustrated newspapers and novels. He also illustrated the works of well-known authors of his time, including the writings of dedicated social reformer Walter Besant.

But only a few years later, Forestier found his artistic destiny when he began to focus on historical and prehistoric subjects. He became famous for the extremely meticulous and detailed illustration of life in a prehistoric Iron Age village near Glastonbury in England. The illustrations translated the results of early archaeological research in Europe into images and made the findings accessible to a wide audience. The work of Forestier soon coined in both England and on the continent, the general idea of ??life in prehistoric times and continue to today.

World famous is his depiction of the 1922 "Nebraska Man" portraying the "Neanderthal of North America", created in response to another archaeological excavation. In his late work, the artist was always inspired by his imagination, scientifically, the famous sketch was already considered unacceptable.

Forestier died in 1930 as a respected artist in his adoptive England. © Meisterdrucke
