The Romans equated their goddess of love, Venus, with the Greek Aphrodite, who according to legend was born of meerschaum after Kronos had emasculated his father Uranos and thrown the phallus into the sea. Aphrodite is said to have escaped from the floods of Zephyrs (left in the picture with the nymph Chloris or Aura, goddess of the dawn, in the arms) on the coast of Cyprus. On Botticelli's painting is Aphrodite / Venus on a scallop shell and one of the hearers, presumably the spring goddess Thallo, throws her a robe. For the Italians, Venus, the mother of Aeneas, the ancestor of the Romans, had a special significance in addition to Mars, the father of Romolus and Remus, whose mother was Aeneas' lineage, as evidence of the divine origin of their people. © Meisterdrucke
